Fix The Velvet Lining In Your Favorite Wooden Chests

Wooden chests that are opened and shut often might break a hinge, or get scratched or dented, or damage the velvet lining. Minor mishaps can happen that can damage your favorite jewelry box and mar it's beauty and in some cases, you may not be able to use it too.

This article will teach you how to fix the velvet lining of your jewelry box and reclaim your jewelry box with your own hands . Velvet is woven out of different types of fibers and when lycra is also added, it makes the velvet stretchable and simpler to install. The most expensive is velvet made purely out of silk. Viscose, acetate, polyester, etc are some of the synthetic fibers used to make velvet.

There are 2 types of velvet lining:

1. Velvet with a backer (with or without adhesive) and
2. Velvet without a backer (with or without adhesive).

Handling velvet without a backer is definitely more difficult in all aspects. Cutting, stretching, and adding adhesive can be a headache. And it is mostly used while installing the bottom or drawer as it allows the artisan to apply the velvet, cut it , and then insert the bottom and glue it into place with the velvet already installed for a perfect finish around the edges.

However, if you are trying to replace a torn or frayed velvet lining, or just trying to make a jewelry box out of an ordinary wooden box, you will find the velvet with a backer easier to cut, stretch, and add glue (if are using the velvet with the adhesiveless backer). The major drawback is that it is very difficult to get a perfect fit when you try to add the velvet after the drawer or bottom is already installed. But again, the backer prevents bubbles from forming in the velvet during the installation and also from shrinkage due to over-stretching.

It is essentially a matter of personal choice; whether you want to use an adhesive backed velvet or a non-adhesive backed velvet and also depends on the glue you plan to use. Gluing in non-adhesive backed velvet can sometimes lead to an uneven application of the glue resulting in glue clumps, which you won’t be able to flatten out. The only benefit here is that you get to use the glue of your choice which you feel is right for the application.

If you are repairing the lining or if you are planning to install velvet in an old box, it would be best to use the velvet with adhesive backer on it. This is especially true if you are inexperienced at installing velvet and if don’t have all the proper equipment. This is the most pliant type of velvet to use and with patience and care, you might just be able to install it correctly! You will agree that nothing is more satisfying than a job well done without anybody's help. Especially if it's fixing something like your daughter or wife's favorite jewelry box .
