Rubber bracelets: Transforming A Novelty Into Fundraising cash
Rubber bracelets that were very fashionable among the punk rock bands between 1970-1980, began as a movement against people who wore precious metal jewelry. They were created simply of black, rubber o-rings, a far cry from gold, platinum and silver.
These bracelets turned very fashionable in the 1980's when worn by celebs in their videos and concerts. Although called "rubber", these weren't actually created from rubber, but silicone. To this day, they are made out of silicone. Over the same timeframe, a second hot item was the jelly bracelet. These consisted of thin rubber bands, in opaque and translucent colors, and would even feature embedded glitter. Although this new novelty could be found anywhere, it was most popular to trade with friends, or buy them in gum machines, convenience stores and mail order.
Around the late 1990's, Rubber Band Bracelets shot to popularity. Usually, thick rubber bands were gathered from around banded veggies in the food store and used on the wrist. This trend, however, didn't last long as actual rubber is very uncomfortable; it snaps and sticks to the skin and hair, plus it breaks down easily from sweat and body oils and disintegrates.
This trend, similar to others, was lost to history. The Sex Bracelets, made of Jelly Bracelets, came in various colors and were soon the next greatest trend. The objective of the various colors was to show what sex act one was ready to perform, depending on the color of the band. Anyone interested would come up to the person sporting the bracelet, snap the color band they preferred, and the wearer was supposed to produce what they advertised.
The Sex Bracelet Code Breakdown was well-known among the teens, listed on websites, and posted anywhere teens seemed to research. The symbolism varied, some created their own, but it was well known with this age group what one was saying when wearing the bracelets . As you would expect, it wasn't long before Sex Bracelets were prohibited from the schools. If curious, anyone can still search on-line and discover all the sex colors listed!
If one didn't feel like purchasing jelly bands, there were directions to be found on how to make one. One set of instructions recommended slicing thin strands of rubber from an old tire using a very sharp blade. Once done, the strands can be braided or woven into the desired style.
Another unique technique to create a bracelet is to unroll 3 prophylactics, by using as many color combinations as desired, and braid them together; the more color and texture, the better. Once finished, place a metal clasp onto each end to keep it secure and, voila! You're now the proud owner of your own especially unique Jelly Bracelet.
Like all fad, these bracelets manage to come and go with different objectives. Around 2004, Lance Armstrong and nike united their efforts. They created the LiveStrong yellow band which quickly became the motto of Armstrong's foundation for cancer research. today, just about anyone with a goal and a cause can produce a silicone bracelet or buy them for resale to raise cash for a non-profit organization. In addition to being fun and attractive, these bracelets can be positive and instrumental in passing along a critical message. Who knows; one might actually have a message that is important to you some day.
