Yes Gymnastics Artistic was 1st introduced into the Olympics in 1896 for men only. It has been apart of every Olympics since then. Women didn't compete in Olympics until 1928 Team and 1952 for individual apparatus.
Originally the men had to compete in such Olympic disciplines as rope climbing, tumbling and club swinging. Since it has been modified in 1924 it includes the following 6 apparatus floor exercise, horizontal bar, parallel bars, rings, pommel horse and vault.
Women- Floor exercise, balance beam, uneven bars and vault.
Federation International de Gymnastique (FIG) was formed on July 23 1881became the governing body of Gymnastics when representatives of Belgium, France and the Netherlands gymnastics met in Liege ,Belgium.

In 1897 the number increased to 17 more national associations and the USA joined in 1921. today it has 128 affiliated national federations and ii headquartered in Moutier, Switzerland.
Besided Artistic Gymnastics the 2 other disciplines include Rythmic Gymnastics since 1984 women only. Trampoline 2000 for both men and women.
