Teaching Your Little One To Go Down Stairs? Use One Of These Techniques
Teaching a toddler to descend stairs can be a worrying time for parents. When toddlers go down stairs, many parents have concerns over their safety. Children often fall down stairs and hurt themselves, which is why parents get so worried. seeing your child in pain can be an extremely distressing experience.
Here are two techniques to consider when teaching your child to go up and down stairs. It will put your mind at ease knowing that they know how to descend your stairs safely.
1. Crawl Backwards
Toddlers can often be over-confident when it comes to stairs. You will often see them sliding down stairs any which way they choose, which can be very dangerous.
One technique you could use is to teach them to crawl backwards down the stairs – the same technique they used to crawl up. Toddlers can grasp this technique relatively quickly.
Even when they become accomplished at crawling backwards down the stairs, you should always stay just in front of them. Ergo, you’ll be on hand to stabilise them should they lose their balance.
2. On their bottoms
Some may take the option of teaching them to go down on their bottoms. Many choose this option because it allows them to see where they are going. If this is you, then teach your toddler to go down on their bottom.
When teaching the ‘on the bottoms’ technique, let them slide down one step at a time. Make sure they keep a hand close to the stair spindles for balance and always stay in front of them so you can stabilise them should they slide down a little too quickly!
Bear these points in mind when teaching your toddler to descend your stairs. In no time at all, they’ll be descending your stairs.
